Golf is a Game of Great Opportunity for All

AS WE TRANSITION from a busy summer to a busy fall, let me take a moment to congratulate Chase Cline, our State Junior champion; Zach Adams, our State Amateur champion; and Todd White, this year’s British Senior Amateur champion. Also, let me thank the members at The Woodcreek Club for hosting a phenomenal junior championship and the members of the Country Club of Charleston for hosting an awesome amateur championship. I also thank the entire team at the SCGA and the SCJGA for all they do creating exceptional tournament experiences for members, young and old.

Reflecting on what the game of golf has provided my family and me over the years, the word “opportunity” comes to mind. For many of us, the opportunity to play the game of golf has created life-long friendships, family memories and a venue to compete with players of all ages and abilities. Personally, the game has provided me the opportunity to create and cultivate business relationships, to experience the highest levels of junior, collegiate, USGA and professional events.

However, the biggest opportunity that golf has provided me is the ability to impact the lives of disadvantaged youth, physically challenged youth and adults, as well as many others through various charities that utilize the love for golf to raise funds for numerous worthy causes.

As we strive to grow the game of golf across all demographics, golf continues to find ways to get all types of people involved. Opportunities provided by venues such as TopGolf, golf simulator facilities, and short courses like 3’s Greenville and The Cradle at Pinehurst get people introduced to the game and about it.

Junior programs like the PGA Junior League, The First Tee, Youth on Course and our own SCJGA tournament series allow kids of all ages to be introduced to the game of a lifetime and the opportunity to create friendships and business relationships for the future.

Operation 36 has been a real game changer, giving all people from youth, beginners, male and female an easily accessible introduction to the game. The format is easy to understand, competitive and provides a social opportunity to make new friends in an environment that is welcoming and fun.

One last opportunity that golf has been able to provide a growing segment of our population is through adaptive golf programs. In our state, Carolina Adaptive Golf provides golf opportunities to disabled veterans, individuals recovering from physical and mental trauma, as well as children and young adults with developmental, cognitive and physical special needs.

Our state also has the Range Fore Hope Foundation, which fosters and encourages participants to use golf as a therapeutic resource and an adaptive alternative to combat the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder with the goal of improving the participants’ physical, mental and social well-being.

The adaptive golf concept has been embraced by the USGA with the 3rd annual USGA Adaptive Golf Open staged in June in Newton, KS. The Palmetto State Adaptive Golf Open at Columbia Country Club is set for November 2 and 3.

As you can see, the opportunities that the game of golf provides are manifold and the number of people — young, old, healthy, physically challenged, mentally challenged or facing other obstacles — that can be impacted for a greater good is limitless.

As we look forward and swing into fall, let us all embrace the opportunities that golf presents so we can have a positive impact on those around us, no matter their walk of life.

Golf is a game for all people and can last a lifetime. Sure, it can create a lot of frustration, but it can also bring an abundance of joy and happiness as we help each other be successful in life. I hope we all remember that we are not defined in life by our handicap or score on a scorecard but how we use this game to better our communities, state and country.
